Alabama Republican Gov. Robert Bentley is being pressured to resign by state lawmakers as talk of impeachment continues to spread.
“Let’s end this embarrassment to our state right now,” Alabama House Speaker and fellow Republican Mac McCutcheon said to Bentley via a press conference Friday. “It’s the only way to avoid taking our state on a long, painful and embarrassing journey whose ending is likely already known to us all.”
Western Journalism reported that this came after it was revealed that Bentley was caught cheating on his wife with a staffer via phone call recordings from 2014. Bentley has thus far refused to step down, arguing that he did not break any laws during his affair.
“I do not plan to resign,” Bentley said during a Friday press conference. “I have done nothing illegal. If the people want to know if I misused state resources, the answer is simply no, I have not.”
Bentley has been accused of creating an “atmosphere of intimidation” as he tried to silence anyone in regards to his affair with Rebekah Mason. He reportedly used career law enforcement to pressure people to stay silent about the affair.
