Legendary Musician Dies Suddenly – Fans Shocked, Devastated

Fans are in mourning today after guitarist John Warren Geils Jr., founder of The J. Geils Band known for such hits as “Love Stinks,” ”Freeze Frame” and “Centerfold,” passed away this week. He was 71 years-old.

Daily Mail reported that police found Geils dead at around 4pm on Tuesday, when officers went to his Groton, Massachusetts home to conduct a welfare check. Police do not suspect foul play, saying “a preliminary investigation indicates that Geils died of natural causes.”

Geils founded the J. Geils Band in 1967 when he was studying at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute. The band went on to release 12 studio albums until they broke up in 1985, but they had reunited multiple times in recent years. The band was comprised of Geils, Danny Klein, Magic Dick Salwitz, Stephen Jo Bladd, Peter Wolf, and Seth Justman.

The band’s song “Centerfold” was released in late 1981 and would hit No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in February 1982. It remained there for six weeks and was heavily featured on MTV in the early days of the network.

Tributes are pouring in for Geils on Twitter:

Rest in peace, J. Geils!
