Congress’s top tax expert is leading a charge by Republicans demanding President Donald Trump fire IRS Commissioner John Koskinen, saying that it will be impossible to repair the tax agency as long as he is in charge.
“Trust in the IRS is hitting rock-bottom,” the Republicans, led by Rep. Kevin Brady, chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, said in a letter to Trump.
The Washington Times reported that the 15 committee Republicans who signed the letter pointed out that the IRS destroyed evidence from key figure Lois G. Lerner’s computer in the tea party targeting probe and also “intentionally” made the tax experience painful for customers in order to make a political point to the GOP.
Koskinen was put in charge of the agency in 2013 in the hopes that he would clean it up, but Republicans say he has shown that he can’t do it. Though his term is set to expire in November, Republicans say Trump can’t afford to wait that long.
“He has been dishonest with Congress, and the IRS—under his watch—has continuously violated taxpayer rights. He has to go,” Mr. Brady said. “We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity for pro-growth tax reform, and we need a willing partner at the IRS to implement it. That partner is not John Koskinen.”
