HAPPENING NOW: Two Chinese Fighter Jets INTERCEPT US Aircraft

Two Chinese fighter jets intercepted a U.S. “sniffer” airplane as it flew over the East China Sea on Wednesday.

Two U.S. military officials told NBC News that the WC-135 Constant Phoenix aircraft, which “sniffs” the atmosphere for signs of nuclear activity, was completing a routine mission in international airspace over the East China Sea when two Sukhoi Su-30 fighter aircraft intercepted it.

The crew of the American plane described the interception as “unprofessional,” and U.S. officials would not confirm whether or not it was unsafe. They explained that the U.S. plane was acting in accordance with international law at the time of the interception.

The officials added that this issue is being addressed with China through “appropriate diplomatic channels.”
