A gunman went on a rampage in Maine on Wednesday in what police are calling an “extreme case of domestic violence.”

Daily Mail reported that Carroll Tuttle Jr., 51, fatally shot his wife Lori Hayden, 52, their son, Dustin Tuttle, 25, and their neighbor Michael Spalding, 57, before police were able to shoot him dead. A fourth victim, Harvey Austin, 57, has been hospitalized for multiple gunshot wounds.

Police were called at 7:37am on Wednesday about the shootings on Russell Road in Skowhegan, just a few miles from Madison, a town of less than 5,000 people in central Maine. Tuttle Jr. lived with his wife and son in a trailer there, and other family members lived in a camper on the same property.

“Our role now is to investigate exactly what happened, and what set this gunman off,” said Steve McCausland, a spokesman the Maine State Police.

Tuttle began by killing his wife and son in their trailer before going elsewhere. Where exactly he went is not known at this time.

“The specifics of where he was after that point is still being researched and investigated, but he did return to his home, the same home he shot his wife and son at,” McCausland added.

Tuttle eventually went to Spalding’s home, located a short distance away on Russell Road, and shot him before returning to his own trailer. He was shot dead by police as soon as he arrived at his trailer.

“What we’re investigating now at this point is a domestic violence killing of both Ms. Hayden and of Dustin,” McCausland said. “The connection as to why the other two men were shot are questions we really don’t have an answer to at this point, but we are going to do our best to get those answers.”
